Choosing the Right Marble (Without Regret)

Statuario, Calacatta, travertine — a designer's field guide to picking stone that ages beautifully.

Choosing the Right Marble (Without Regret)

There is a quiet confidence in a room that knows exactly what it is. It doesn't shout for attention; it simply holds you. That feeling — of everything being in its right place — is the outcome of hundreds of small, deliberate decisions.

At Hillwood, we start every project by subtracting. What can this space do without? What is the one gesture that makes the whole room sing? Only once we've found that answer do we begin to add, and even then, sparingly.

Material is memory. The grain of an oak floor, the cool of a marble sill, the warmth of a brass handle worn smooth by a decade of hands — these are the things you feel long after you've stopped noticing the design. We choose materials that will age into the story of your home rather than out of it.

Light is the final, invisible material. We design for the day's arc: the low gold of morning, the flat clarity of noon, the amber of evening. A well-considered home is beautiful at every hour, and never the same twice.
